Higher Walton rail accident : ウィキペディア英語版
Warrington rail crash

The Warrington rail crash occurred at Walton Junction just south of the town of Warrington in Lancashire on 29 June 1867. The collision involved a passenger train running into the back of a coal train. Eight people were killed and 33 injured. The accident resulted in changes being made to the management of points and signals.
==Location==

Walton Junction was where the main line of the Birkenhead, Lancashire and Cheshire Railway (BLC) diverged from the London and North Western Railway. It was located about south of Warrington Bank Quay station.〔(Pre-grouping map showing Walton Junction at Acton Grange, Walton & Warrington )〕
The junction, which was just beyond the first Walton Bridge that spanned the River Mersey, was made obsolete with the construction of Manchester Ship Canal in the 1890s.
A four-track bridge carried the new main line over the ship canal to the new junction (which is still in operation today). The BLC consolidated their line with the new one thus avoiding the need to build their own bridge. Instead the former -to-Birkenhead mainline was downgraded to a branch line leading to a marshalling yard.
